The Matchstick Archive was created by the archivist, Cora Panning, in May of 2026. Panning was a student in the Library and Information Science program at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) from 2020-2028, earning both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. This archive acts as a final project for the LIS 647 Introduction to Archives class taught at USM by Dr. Jeffrey Hirschey.
This collection is made up of 8 boxes of matchbooks and matchboxes collected by the archivist, Cora Panning, largely from thrift stores, second hand shops, and consignment shops in Southern Mississippi in May of 2024 and throughout 2025. Included are matchbooks and match boxes of varying sizes, brands, and designs.
This digital collection is open for research with no restrictions. Physical access to archival materials is restricted to all non-employees.
